Stand Together Against Child Abuse

On October 7, 2021 at 8:00 a.m., Children’s Trust read the first of 15,277 names of children reported as abused in the 22 jurisdictions served by Children’s Trust. Each name represents an actual child and their experience of abuse. Through this event, we will bring awareness to our community about the prevalence of child abuse.

For over 18 hours straight on the Roanoke City Market, volunteers read the names, ages, and jurisdictions of children who were reported as abused in 2020. Because these children are minors and their identities must be protected, “Jane Doe” and “John Doe” will be used in place of their names.

“Children’s Trust hopes that through Save Jane, Roanoke, Bedford, New River Valley, Carroll County and the surrounding areas will recognize the absolute magnitude and prevalence of child abuse in our region- it is everywhere you look,” said Beth Eisenzimmer, CAC Family Advocate Coordinator. “It will take over 16 hours of non-stop reading to name each child who reported abuse last year. That is simply unacceptable. The event will go through the day and into the night because that is representative of Children’s Trust – we never stop fighting for these kids who have suffered unspeakable abuse. Children’s Trust will continue to do our work, but we need the community’s help.”

Influential leaders from around the community have signed up for shifts to read names throughout the event. Children’s Trust welcomes anyone in our service area to take a turn on-stage and participate in this impactful event by reading a selection of names.
